Challenge

Establish a brand identity for Code Rising, a newly formed STEAM nonprofit that could compete for funding from government agencies and high-impact corporate donors while authentically representing the organization's mission to prepare underserved students for tech careers.

We believe every student in every neighborhood deserves a quality STEAM education.

Approach

As a founding member, I collaborated with fellow founders to define the organization's strategic positioning and brand direction. Researched the STEAM education nonprofit landscape to identify opportunities for differentiation. Developed a comprehensive brand system that balanced professional credibility with mission-driven authenticity—creating a modern visual identity that intentionally skewed corporate to resonate with government and industry partners. Produced the complete brand toolkit including visual identity, brand voice, messaging and positioning framework, typography system, and imagery standards.

Results

Code Rising launched with a polished brand identity that enabled the organization to secure partnerships with Amazon Web Services, Dominion Energy, NASA, and the City of Alexandria. The professional brand positioning supported the organization's growth from concept to fully operational year-round programming serving K-12 students across elementary, middle, and high school levels. The brand system equipped the founding team and board to maintain consistency as they scaled from initial launch through program expansion and donor development.
